Generic live video is forgiving. You upload a feed, it goes out, viewers watch. Live sports is not forgiving because the feed has a fixed start time, a known endpoint, and a viewer population that spikes from near zero to hundreds of thousands in minutes. Every component in the chain has to assume the worst moment is about to happen, not the average. That is why sports pipelines are built around burst capacity, low latency targets, and fast failover rather than steady state efficiency. The wrong choice here is a single CDN with no multi CDN fallback and no origin shield. The right choice depends on where your audience sits and which providers have presence there. Multi CDN is more complex to operate but reduces the blast radius of any single provider having a bad day. A useful sanity check before committing to a vendor is to ask how their architecture behaves when a regional POP goes dark mid match, because that is the failure mode you are actually buying protection against.

Latency Targets And What They Cost You

Three to five seconds is the default for most live sports products and is the easiest to deliver. Going below that into the one to three second range, sometimes called low latency, requires CMAF with chunked transfer or WebRTC, both of which tighten the buffer between encoder and viewer. Below one second puts you in true real time territory and usually means WebRTC or a custom protocol, which costs you in CDN compatibility and in the ability to do server side ad insertion cleanly. The right target depends on the sport and the second screen experience you want. For a fan watching alone, five seconds is fine. Latency is also the place where the marketing story and the engineering reality diverge the most. Every vendor quotes a sub second number. Read the fine print: that number is usually measured from glass to glass in a lab, not from camera sensor to the eye of a viewer on cellular in a stadium. Ask for end to end numbers under load, and ask how they degrade when the origin is under stress. A platform that holds one second at five thousand concurrent viewers but slips to eight seconds at fifty thousand is not a low latency platform for your purposes, no matter what the headline says.

Monetization, Rights, And The Boring Parts That Bite You

Sports rights are territorial, time bound, and increasingly device bound. A streaming stack that cannot enforce geolocation at the edge, blackout a region, or revoke a stream after a contract ends is a platform that will eventually cost you a rights fee. Sports viewers churn fast and come back fast, and the platform you choose has to give you clean per session metrics, the ability to fire ad breaks at the producer cue, and an API surface you can actually build a second screen experience on. If you cannot extract events from the stream or hook into a clock, you are paying for a video pipe and calling it a sports platform. The right way to evaluate a vendor here is to ask for a sandbox and to try, in a single afternoon, to build the minimum thing you would put in front of a paying viewer.
